Little Lake Lessons Come to the Colchester Causeway Bike Ferry Crossing This Summer
The Colchester Causeway, a 13.4-mile rail trail located in northwest Vermont, is a great place for hikers, bikers, and rollers to enjoy breathtaking views of Lake Champlain. Again this summer, lake lovers will also get the chance to learn more about Lake Champlain!
Lake Champlain Sea Grant is partnering with Local Motion to engage and educate people about the lake. Each Friday and Saturday (11am to 3pm) June 3 through August 27, Lake Champlain Sea Grant staff will be at the bike ferry crossing to share their passion for the lake with visitors queued for the ferry. Visitors can choose what they want to learn about:
- Lake Champlain’s formation and water flow patterns.
- The lake's cultural history.
- Amazing animals that depend on the lake including eastern spiny softshell turtles, sea lamprey, and common tern.
- Challenges facing the lake including poop (yes, poop!), microplastics, and mercury contamination.
- Stewardship activities that visitors can participate in to help the lake.
Bridging science and recreation at the Colchester Causeway is one of the highlights of Lake Champlain Sea Grant staff in the summer. No one day at the Causeway is the same—some days are quiet, while others are very busy. The audience varies too, from groups of friends on their way to local wineries, to buddies on a bike trip around the lake, to families enjoying time together. The atmosphere is relaxed and joyful!
Last summer, Lake Champlain Sea Grant engaged more than 150 visitors and shared actions everyone can take to protect the lake and improve its health. We are looking forward to another great summer!
