Undergraduate Opportunities
Opportunities at Lake Champlain Sea Grant
- Lake Champlain Sea Grant Scholars Program
-
The mission of Lake Champlain Sea Grant is to develop and share science-based knowledge to benefit the environment and economies. We offer a 13-month Sea Grant Scholars program for University of Vermont (UVM) undergraduate students interested in the sciences and related fields. Scholars receive a one-year academic scholarship to offset costs of education and expenses, a paid summer internship, and ongoing professional development opportunities.
Selected scholars will be awarded:
- an academic scholarship of $5000 for the 2024-25 academic year;
- a multi-day professional development workshop in the Lake Champlain basin August 22-25, 2024;
- regular professional development opportunities with other Sea Grant Scholars throughout the academic year; and
- a paid ($5000) internship during summer 2025 tailored to meet each Scholar's individual career interests.
- Watershed Educator Internship
-
Watershed Alliance aims to increase awareness and knowledge of watershed issues in the Lake Champlain Basin (both in NY and VT). Each spring and fall we hire a cohort of undergraduate students, known as Watershed Educators, who are actively looking to gain experience educating K-12 students about water resources and watershed education. Watershed Educators receive training in stream ecology, watershed science and teaching science as inquiry. They learn important group management skills that are applicable both in the field and classroom. These skills are then used to teach K-12 students about our watershed out on our research vessel, at local stream sites, or in classrooms across the state (mileage is reimbursed for travel).
- Science Communications Internship
-
Work with Lake Champlain Sea Grant communications staff and peers to develop public-facing educational materials such as brochures, fact sheets, news articles, videos, and social media campaigns on issues such as:
- water quality
- aquatic food web dynamics
- microplastics
- flood resiliency
- green infrastructure
- K12 watershed education
