Vermont Lay Monitoring Program
Lake Champlain Sea Grant partners with the Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Lakes Lay Monitoring Program (LMP), a state-wide volunteer water quality sampling network initiated in 1979 and representing more than 100 inland lakes and 40 Lake Champlain stations.
LMP staff equip and train volunteers to sample a lake for total phosphorus (nutrient) concentration, chlorophyll-a (algae and cyanobacteria) concentration, and/or Secchi disk depth (water clarity) throughout the summer. The goals of LMP are to establish baseline water quality conditions, track long-term trends, and educate lake users about lake ecology and stewardship.
