Vermont DEC and Lake Champlain Sea Grant Study Cyanobacteria in Lake Morey & Fairlee

Mark Mitchell, the Lake Monitoring and Community Outreach Coordinator with Lake Champlain Sea Grant, leads a program of more than 100 lake monitoring volunteers across Vermont. He joined his colleagues in the Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) who are studying Lake Morey and Lake Fairlee in eastern Vermont this summer.

Rising phosphorus levels in the lakes, along with increasing temperatures, foretell of worsening cyanobacteria levels. DEC scientists hope to learn how to combat the cyanobacteria, often called blue-green algae, before they bloom into a much bigger problem. Cyanobacteria can be toxic to people and pets.
