Vermont Summer Public Trip Series 2025 - Trip 3

Event Description: Each summer Lake Champlain Sea Grant and UVM Extension host a series of Summer on the Lake educational boat trips. The public is invited aboard the UVM research and education vessel, the R/V Marcelle Melosira, to build scientific, geologic, cultural, and historical knowledge about Lake Champlain and its watershed. There will be four public Vermont trips offered for Summer 2025 (see dates below). 

Age Restriction: Participants must be a minimum of 8 years old to attend. Individuals under this age limit will not be allowed on the boat due to safety concerns. Anyone between the ages of 8-17 must have a parent/guardian present with them to participate. 

Location: On Lake Champlain aboard the R/V Marcelle Melosira 

  • Meet at the Rubenstein Ecosystem Science Laboratory, Loading Dock (outback by boat launch) - 3 College Street, Burlington, VT. You must pay to park. 

Trip 3: Stories of Lake Champlain – Thursday, July 31st, 2025 – 5pm - 7pm 

  • Please arrive 15 minutes prior to your selected time to use the restroom and sign paperwork. 

Trip Description: Stories of Lake Champlain will provide a cultural and historical view of Lake Champlain. First, participants will learn about the culture and history of native tribes in the area and their relationship with water by watching a short film called Nebi: Abenaki Ways of Knowing Water. Then, participants will board the R/V Melosira and head out on the water to learn about geology and the formation of the Lake Champlain basin and lake. Later in the trip, participants will learn about the lake’s naval history following European settlement before returning to dock 

Stops and sights on the trip include: 

  • Red Rocks 
  • Lone Rock Point 
  • Rock Dunder, a small rock island, which embodies the spirit of Oodzee-hozo, the creator of Lake Champlain in Abenaki legend 
  • The Horse Ferry Shipwreck, located off of North Beach 

Price: $35 per person
