Recreational boating, sewage production, and potential implications for phosphorus loading in Lake Champlain

Published 2022
In this scientific article in the Journal of Outdoor Recreation and Tourism, researchers conducted surveys of marinas and boaters to estimate sewage production by marina-using boaters. These data allowed estimation of potential phosphorus contributions to Lake Champlain by improperly disposed sewage. Such contributions were negligible compared to other known Lake Champlain phosphorus sources.

Research Seminar: Efficacy of a Woodchip Bioreactor for Denitrification of Tertiary Effluent from the Bolton Wastewater Treatment Plant (Lake George, Warren Country, New York)

Published 2022
In this video, researchers from the Lake George Association and the Town of Bolton, NY presented results from their completed Lake Champlain Sea Grant-funded project to test a woodchip bioreactor to treat effluent from the Town of Bolton wastewater treatment plant. The bioreactor successfully reduced effluent nitrates by 38 percent.

Research Webinar: Exploring the Response of Legacy Phosphorus and Cyanobacteria Blooms in Lake Carmi to Whole-Lake Aeration

Published 2022
In this research webinar, Ashton Kirol, a Master’s student in geology at the University of Vermont, goes over his research on Lake Carmi, a 'lake in crisis' due to high phosphorus loads and cyanobacteria blooms. He discusses what changes were observed within the lake due to aeration, why the timing of phosphorus release and bloom activity shifted to earlier in the summer, and future management options.
