Research Webinar: Mapping Road Salt Storage Facilities in Vermont’s Lake Champlain Basin: An analysis of potential drinking water impacts in vulnerable communities

Use of deicing materials (road salt) in Vermont has increased in the past decades. Chemical constituents associated with deicing materials can potentially pose a risk to drinking water quality. While deicing materials applied to roads represent a distributed, ephemeral source of salts, deicing material storage facilities are a potential year-round source of materials that can impact drinking water wells. This talk will describe a 2022 study which included the development of a geospatial database of deicing storage facilities in the Vermont portion of the Lake Champlain basin and an evaluation of the potential for drinking water impacts in vulnerable communities.
Stephanie Hurley is an Associate Professor of Ecological Landscape Design in the Department of Plant & Soil Science at the University of Vermont. Her research includes watershed and stormwater management, ecological design, urban agroecology, landscape architecture and planning for equitable cities.
Dana Allen is Principal of FluidState Consulting, a Waterbury, Vermont-based consulting firm that focuses on improving water quality using drone mapping, innovative online GIS, efficient stormwater runoff modeling and design, and water quality education and outreach.
Participants should expect approximately 30 minutes of presentation, which will be recorded, followed by a facilitated, 30-minute Q&A period. This webinar is a part of the Lake Champlain Sea Grant Research Webinar Series.
