Winter Maintenance Training for Parking Lots and Sidewalks
There is no doubt that using salt during winter maintenance has saved lives. Its ability to reduce the freezing point of water helps reduce formation of ice on surfaces such as roads, parking lots, and sidewalks. However, it is also true that salt causes negative impacts to the environment such as polluting waters and killing vegetation. Plus, it is corrosive to buildings, bridges, and automobiles, and this shortened life for our infrastructure costs us money. The great news is that with smart salting practices, we can both reduce the use of salt and keep surfaces safe.
The Winter Maintenance Training for Parking Lots and Sidewalks is based on the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) Smart Salting courses (https://www.pca.state.mn.us/water/smart-salting-training) and will be customized for Vermont and the Lake Champlain basin. The training will be offered online using a system called WebEx. An exam will be offered at the end. Those who successfully complete the exam will be listed on the MPCA website and will have the option to be listed on the Lake Champlain Sea Grant website as having successfully completed the course.
